British American Tobacco Ghana Limited engages in the manufacture and sale of cigarettes, tobacco, cigars, and snuffs. The company was formerly known as Pioneer Tobacco Company, Ltd. British American Tobacco is based in Takoradi, Ghana. It operates as a subsidiary of British American Tobacco plc. British American Tobacco Ghana was incorporated on the 1st of November, 1952. the company started cigarette production in 1954 at Takoradi using imported leaf . A year earlier, the company introduced tobacco cultivation on a commercial scale and has since been providing about 80% of its major raw materials locally. The company’s factory in Takoradi was completed in 1959 and in 1988 a green leaf threshing plant was added to the factory. On their brand portfolio are well known local and international brands such as tusker, the first made-in-Ghana cigarette in 1954, State Express 555, Rothmans, Embassy, London, Diplomat and Pall Mall. The company also manufactures Tabaca for the Sierra Leonean market.
